He served as President of Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Member of the Standing Committee of Hubei Provincial Party Committee and Director of the Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Mayor of Wuhan City, Minister of Education and President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
He has long been committed to the teaching and research of mechanical design, numerical control technology and intelligent manufacturing, and has studied and organized the implementation of the development and application of numerical control, CAD and intelligent manufacturing technical routes; The theory of monotonicity analysis and optimization, NC machining direct interpolation and so on are put forward and practiced. Presided over the development of Central China Type I numerical control system and optimization design, mechanical CAD and other series of software products, widely used in machinery, aviation, aerospace, energy and other industries, creating significant social and economic benefits. He has won many national and provincial science and technology progress awards, published more than 200 papers, and published 12 books.
He was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1999.

He has carried out a series of research in the basic theory of electro-hydraulic control, basic components and systems, as well as the key technology development and engineering application of shield and elevator equipment, forming a complete technical route of "theory - component - system - equipment - application", making important contributions to the independent research and development of electromechanical hydraulic equipment in China, and achieving significant economic benefits.
